Over Network Backups: Performance, Congestion and How To Deal

This article discusses the affect of using a real-time continuous backup solution; Genie Timeline 2.1 over a network, by answering the following 3 questions:
- What is the bandwidth usage of multiple users backing up over a network and do you have any figures on the network performance of Timeline?
- I usually use my network for video streaming which takes up a lot of bandwidth, will backups be of a concern?
- How is Timeline designed to reduce impact on system performance?
To begin we should explain how transfers are done over a network. All network transfers take place through the CIFS protocol over TCP, which is subject to throttling and congestion avoidance at the network layer. Switches and routers have policies to prevent TCP applications from causing networking delays which will keep the Genie Timeline file transfers in check. The networking components of Genie Timeline should not adversely affect network performance.
This case is especially true for video and audio streaming/conferencing that are on two different dimensions. Video and audio conferencing network activity all take place over the UDP protocol, which is *not* subject to the same limitations; so Genie Timeline shouldn’t affect the quality of any audio/video sessions over the local LAN.
On the other side is the design and behavior of Timeline itself. Timeline defaults to (and usually runs in) “Smart Mode” which is a resource-friendly backup setting. It both throttles all costly operations (both in terms of CPU or I/O activity, such as access to local disks and LAN storage units), and runs in a reduced priority mode. In this mode, Genie Timeline runs almost invisibly in the background, and does not affect neither any running applications nor any network activity.
The actual numbers for network transfers vary depending on the data selected for transfer. It should be noted that certain file types are backed up using our own proprietary differential backup algorithm, Block Level. For these files, only the changed portions of the file are sent to the backup device, drastically minimizing the transfer amounts for large files such as multi-GB Outlook PST’s. Furthermore, the frequency of the backup can be controlled – while under all configurations Timeline remains a real-time backup solution, the actual writes can be coalesced to disk flexibly: anywhere from every 3 minutes to every several hours as needed, each with its own distinct bandwidth requirements.

This USB drive is built tough, even though it is unlikely that such circumstances could happen, at least it can protect from abusive luggage handling at the airport, forgetting the drive in the car on a sunny day or even getting water on it somehow.

Your body is the controller; Microsoft Kinect is the future of gaming

What Is Xbox 360 Kinect?
Kinect is the new controller from Microsoft for the Xbox 360 gaming console, it is more of a peripheral than a controller that you can hold in your hand, it consists of a camera that uses infrared scanning to track you movements around a room transforming your body into a controller.
Kinect was formerly known as Project Natal and videos on the internet showed how advanced the camera is with facial recognition, gesture recognition and a very advanced UI.

Other goodies with Kinect include a microphone so you can talk to the 360, a separate menu system than you’ve known on the 360 and Skype-like chat software called “videokinect” to sweeten the deal.

Leaked Slides Show Windows 8 Roadmap

Prototype Windows machine, Apple references and a product cycle. Heard of Windows 8 yet?
Leaked slides spread all over the internet give us an internal look at Windows 8 and the road map that Microsoft is laying out. While Microsoft declined to comment on the presentation’s authenticity, the slides seem to be authentic and are full of information about Windows 8.
Some of the prominent features that can be taken from the slides are that Windows 8 has the iPad’s instant on ability; “Windows 8 PCs turn on fast, nearly instantly in some cases, and are ready to work without any long or unexpected delays” one slide says. There are also very interesting pictures of a prototype Windows 8 machine that looks like an Apple desktop and included are specifications and hardware capabilities.

I have used many backup products that either slow down your computer take a large footprint and are mostly unwieldy and cumbersome to use, added to which you have to be more than just a computer user some require that you become a computer genius to use them…. and then along came the Genius of all backup programmes; Genius has been slightly shortened to become Genie and you only have to try Genie once to instantly realize here is something different. I stated by using Genie Backup Manager Professional a dream to use.I travel so much that my laptop suffers more bangs and knocks than most, so a totally reliable and easy to use backup system is essential and Genie provides this and much, much more.
Genie also have a support team that is helpful are also on Skype and other communications media so very easy to get in-touch and the response is always knowledgeable, polite, and quick. The other back up managers, the ones that need computer knowledge, don’t have the response time that Genie has and their answers are so ambiguous that once again you need to be more than a computer user to work out what their eventual reply is all about.
Then just as I thought that Genie was just about perfect they brought out Genie Timeline Version 2 for me this is the ultimate for a computer user like myself. Genie Timeline 2 after an easy installation does everything itself not shall I do this or shall I do that it does the thinking for you. After installation Genie Timeline Version 2 is the very essence of user friendly small footprint doesn’t slow down computer, one click and it does initial full back up, creates disaster recovery partition on your hard drive which really works I have tried it and it works perfectly. There are multiple choices as far as where you want to back up to external hard disk drive or other media. After full back up Timeline then just backs up any new files and an icon in the taskbar lets you know you are 100% protected. The Genie Timeline is easy to go back on the time line and look at files just as though you were in Windows Explorer. Since I have used Timeline 2 from Genie I haven’t had to touch it or make any adjustments to settings and yes I am 100% backed up to an external hard drive. Genie is Genius and it does exactly what it says on the box, brilliant ease of use, thanks Genie for producing the easiest safest system for people like me to use and make me feel like am expert without the knowledge.
